 IU Trident Indiana University

The acceleration of translational medicine is dependent on the ability of researchers to collaborate virtually. The greatest need is simple multi-institutional file sharing. For the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), we implemented the open source Alfresco Share product to enable easy file sharing. It is web-based – easy to access – and allows researchers to quickly and easily create virtual teams. Each virtual team has an automatically generated site with sophisticated file sharing, wikis, blogs, and discussion lists.

Our initial group of 14 beta testers has grown to over 500 users. Alfresco Share is particularly used in support of multi-institutional research teams as part of the statewide Indiana CTSI, as well as by administrative teams that are working to optimize research administration.

Lowering the barrier for researchers to accomplish the simple tasks they need to undertake for effective virtual collaboration can have an important impact on research – accelerating team science while eliminating a foundational barrier to effective collaboration. Alfresco Share is a simple system that can be used by investigators without any training to accelerate research, providing an important advantage to Indiana investigators without adding technology training burdens.
