IU's "Workshop in a Box" for HPC enables successful USArray Workshop

Indiana University invests millions of dollars on high performance computing (HPC) hardware to facilitate advanced research for faculty, staff and students. The Scientific Applications and Performance Tuning Group (SciAPT) is committed to making available formal training in HPC topics to the IU community. This type of training provides information about of the types of advanced computing resources available and how best to use them for research. To meet the need for HPC training, SciAPT offers "Workshop in a Box" at no cost to IU departments systemwide. "Workshop in a Box" is hands-on training that includes training accounts on IU's supercomputers, reserved computing time if needed, and can be designed to cover a wide variety of topics ranging from UNIX basics to more in-depth topics such as hands-on parallel programming.

In October, the Geological Sciences department sponsored a USArray workshop. IU's Research Technologies (RT) department played a major role in the logistics of the course. RT's Collaboration and Engagement Support group provided the local arrangements, while Ray Sheppard of RT's SciAPT group taught a portion of the course related to programming for IU;s supercomputers. The SciAPT team developed an accelerated parallel programming class specifically for this workshop,

The High Performance Systems (HPS) group implements, operates, and supports some of the fastest supercomputers in the world, IU's Big Red II, the Quarry cluster, Karst, and the large memory Mason system, in order to advance Indiana University's mission in research, training, and engagement in the state. HPS also supports databases and database engines used by the IU community.

The mission of the Scientific Applications and Performance Tuning (SciAPT) group is to deliver and support software tools that promote effective and efficient use of IU's advanced cyberinfrastructure which, in turn, improves research and enables discoveries.

The Collaboration and Engagement Support Group (CESG) helps Indiana University, PTI, and Research Technologies translate innovation into meaningful improvements in the quality of life for residents of the state of Indiana and the US (and world) as a whole.
